Keep yourself focused on the game and your feet locked in by knowing the best tips and tricks for lacing up your football and soccer boots.

Lacing Instructions

Every time you tear up the pitch, make sure you follow these do's and don’ts for lacing up your boots.

  1. Thread the laces: Thread your laces through all the holes along your foot up to the second to last holes around your ankles.
  2. Thread the last two holes on the same side (heel lock): The top shoelace holes on either side of your foot are there to ensure your feet don’t move around within your footy shoes when you play. Thread the last shoelace hole on the same side facing inwards from the outside so it creates a loop. Use this inward lace so your feet from sliding around.
  3. Cross your laces: Start lacing up the shoelaces by threading one side over or under the other, then pull tight.
  4. Loop around your arch: If you have long laces, wrap the excess laces around the arch of your foot in between the ball of your foot and heel.
  5. Finish tying the shoes: Complete tying your laces as you normally would.
  6. Tuck the loops: Loops and laces can flop around when you’re on the move so tuck the extra lace into your shoes between your ankle and upper shoe.

  • Let excess laces drag on the field as they’re easy to trip over.
  • Continue playing the game with laces that aren’t tied up right. It’s one of the most common ways people injure themselves which can take you out of the game.
  • Play with torn or ripped laces. Shoelaces can easily break if pulled on when lacing or stepped on during a footy game.

Shorter Laces: Make sure your boot laces don’t get in the way of you playing the game. If your laces are too long, consider replacing them with shorter ones so they don’t impact your footwork.

Wrap differently: Often players wrap excess shoelaces around the outside of the boots. If you ever feel tension or pain when you do this, move the laces from under your arch to under your heel.

When your laces are done up right, there’s only one thing left to do – out play the competition. If you’re feeling lucky, treat yourself to new football boots. Shop football boots.
