adidas Running Shoe Guide: Adizero vs Supernova vs Adistar vs Ultraboost

With so many options of running shoes which one is for me? Let’s take a look -

Buying running shoes isn’t as straightforward as it used to be. These days, you’ll hear about stack heights, foam densities, heel-to-toe drops, carbon plates, carbon rods…and it’s easy to think:
“Why does this matter? I just want a good pair of running shoes.”

At adidas, we simplify the running shoe landscape into four key franchises, each with a specific purpose. Because not all runs are equal and neither are all runners. Some days you want comfort, other days stability, and sometimes you want pure speed. No matter where you are in your journey, there’s a franchise designed to support you.

Let’s break it down.

The 4 adidas Running Franchises

1. ADIZERO – Lightest. Fastest.

2. SUPERNOVA – Comfort & Supportive daily trainers

3. ADISTAR – Supreme max cushioning

4. ULTRABOOST – The perfect blend of energy, comfort & style

Now let’s take a closer look at what each one offers.

ADIZERO: Built for Speed

Speed is the name of the game. The Adizero franchise is engineered with our lightest materials, most advanced foams, and performance-driven structures. It’s split into two categories:

Race to Win

If you want the fastest or lightest shoe we make, start here.

What defines Race to Win models?

  • Premium lightweight foams
  • Ultra-light uppers
  • Carbon-infused EnergyRods for maximum energy return
  • Designed for race day performance

Think of these as your PB‑chasers: built for efficiency, propulsion, and speed.

Styles include, Adios Pro Evo , Adios Pro 4 , Takumi 11 , Adios 9.

Train to Race

These shoes help you prepare for race day without going “all in” on race-day stiffness.

Train to Race shoes offer:

  • Light and responsive ride
  • Snappy feel
  • More forgiving than carbon-stiff race models
  • Ideal for tempo, interval, and speed sessions

Perfect when you want speed—but not the rigidity of a full race shoe.

Styles include, Boston 13 , Adizero SL2 , Duramo Speed, Duramo SL,  Prime X 3 ,  Evo SL ATR , Evo SL

SUPERNOVA: Your Everyday Trainer

Supernova models are your daily comfort specialists. They’re perfect for new runners, walkers, or anyone prioritising cushioning and support.

What sets Supernova apart?

  • Plush cushioning
  • Softer, more forgiving foams
  • Premium heel pillow
  • More padding at every touch point

This is the foundation of most running rotations, reliable, comfortable, and built for everyday wear.

Styles include the Rise, Solution , Ease Glide.

ADISTAR: Max Cushion for Long Miles

When your legs are beat up or the run is getting long, Adistar steps in.

What Adistar delivers:

  • Maximum cushioning
  • Smooth rocker geometry
  • Guided, stable transitions
  • Designed for long distances and recovery days

If comfort and protection are your top priorities, this is your go‑to.

ULTRABOOST: Energy + Comfort + Style

Ultraboost is the happy medium of the adidas lineup, balancing cushioning, energy return, durability, and style.

What makes Ultraboost special?

  • BOOST midsole: high energy return + long-lasting durability
  • Adaptive primeknit upper for a sock-like feel
  • Cushioned and responsive ride
  • Works for running and lifestyle wear

Take the Ultraboost 5 for example:

  • Energy return close to Adizero
  • Stack height not far off the Adistar
  • Comfort on par with Supernova

It’s the best of all worlds.
